What Does Professional Headlight Restoration Involve?
Restoration removes the oxidised outer layer of plastic and then replaces the protection that failed. The sanding stage is straightforward work; the part that determines whether the result lasts is what goes on afterwards. A lens polished clear but left unsealed will yellow again quickly, because there’s now nothing between raw polycarbonate and Sacramento sun.
- Mask and protect. Surrounding paint and trim are taped off — sanding compound on paint causes its own problems.
- Remove the oxidation. Progressive wet sanding through finer grits takes off the failed layer without gouging the lens.
- Polish to clarity. Machine polishing brings the surface back to optical clearness rather than merely “less yellow”.
- Reseal with UV protection. The critical step. Without a fresh protective layer, oxidation restarts immediately.
Do DIY Headlight Restoration Kits Work?
They genuinely improve clarity in the short term — and that’s the trap. Most kits handle the sanding and polishing reasonably, then finish with a wipe-on sealant that doesn’t hold up. The lenses look excellent for a few months, then yellow faster than before, because sanding removed what was left of the factory coating and nothing durable replaced it.
If you use a kit, the sealing step is the one worth taking seriously. If lenses have already been done once with a kit and clouded again, they can usually still be restored properly.
When Is Restoration Not the Answer?
Restoration works on surface oxidation. It cannot fix damage inside the housing. If there’s moisture or condensation trapped behind the lens, cracking in the plastic, a failed seal, or a reflector that’s gone dull or peeled, polishing the outside won’t help — those need replacement.

Do You Tint Headlights?
